INFORMIX TO SIGNIFICANTLY EXPAND CLIENT/SERVER PRODUCT OFFERINGS New Versions of Informix Database Servers and Client Tools To Be Available for Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh and OS/2 Platforms New and Existing Products To Feature Built-In Client/Server Connectivity MENLO PARK, Calif. (May 31, 1994) -- Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ:IFMX) the leader in parallel processing database computing, today announced plans to expand its client/server product offerings by moving a number of database server and client tools products to new platforms including Microsoft Windows(TM), Microsoft Windows NT(TM), Macintosh(R) and OS/2(R). The new versions will increase the platform options for development and deployment of Informix-based database applications in a client/server environment, and meet the demands of client/server computing including price/performance, ease of use, and application development flexibility and connectivity. "Informix is committed to giving developers the choice to select the best platforms to meet their needs for developing and deploying client/server-based applications," said Tony Rodoni, director, product management, Informix. "Informix's expanded product line will provide developers with the flexibility to create applications on virtually any client/server desktop. Developers will also be able to deploy applications to the desktop platform that fits the corporation's requirements -- from PCs to mainframe class open systems." New Database Server Products Informix plans to release new versions of INFORMIX-SE, the industry's most successful, easy-to-deploy and administer database server for midrange and smaller systems, on Windows and OS/2 during the second half of 1994. INFORMIX-SE has been available in a wide range of UNIX versions as well as in Microsoft DOS and Windows NT implementations. With the move of application development to Windows and OS/2 for many corporations, development organizations need local, desktop versions of the database server technology that can also be used later in client/server deployment. The availability of INFORMIX-SE on Windows and OS/2 will meet this demand as well as provide excellent implementation options for smaller departmental and workgroup applications. Applications built with INFORMIX-SE are easily migratable to Informix's new parallel database server, INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM), thereby providing users with the scalability and flexibility to cost-effectively develop applications in an easy-to-use yet robust environment, then easily migrate those applications to larger mainframe-caliber environments. New Client Tools INFORMIX-ESQL/C, which enables developers to embed SQL statements directly into the code of C applications, has been shipping on Windows since January, 1994 and is now scheduled for availability on Windows NT during the second quarter of 1994 and on OS/2 and Macintosh platforms during the third quarter of 1994. The new versions of ESQL/C will join the existing UNIX, DOS and Windows versions. ESQL/C eliminates the need for developers to write separate database functions, allowing them to focus on other aspects of the development process. During the second half of 1994, Informix plans to release Macintosh versions of INFORMIX-HyperScript Tools(R), a visual programming environment used to create decision-support, client/server applications, and INFORMIX-ViewPoint(TM), a graphical SQL database access tool which enables end-users to easily access corporate databases. Multiplatform support for HyperScript Tools will enable developers to create applications on one client platform, such as Windows, and then deploy across Windows, OSF/Motif and Macintosh environments without any modification of code. ViewPoint users will have the ability to share forms, reports and queries across Windows, OSF/Motif and Macintosh as well. Built-In Client/Server Connectivity The new versions of Informix's database products will feature built in client/server connectivity via the company's INFORMIX-NET connectivity tool. INFORMIX-NET links Informix and other application development tools to the full line of high performance Informix database servers, and enables users to maximize their client/server hardware resources across the network by distributing the computing workload between server machines and desktop PCs. INFORMIX-NET will be embedded in all future releases of Informix server and tools products and is currently built in to many existing versions of Informix databases and tools. Built-in client/server connectivity eliminates the need for users to purchase additional networking products in order to deploy their applications across heterogeneous client/server networks. About Informix Informix Software is the leading supplier of high performance, parallel processing database technology for open systems. The company's database servers are the number one choice of computer hardware manufacturers for publishing Transaction Processing Council (TPC) benchmarks for UNIX-based systems.
