Help With Hypothetical VLDB Question
Posted in 1996
Dear Fellow Informix Users: One of our sales guys asked me if Informix could handle a system which has the following base requirements: 15 million customer bills added monthly. 5000 customer service terminals, issuing 1 req./terminal every 3 min., approx. 30 requests per second sustained. Future requirements: 30 million bills added monthly. 15000 customer service terminals, issuing 1 req./terminal every 3 min., approx. 90 requests per second sustained. Now for the fun part. Let's assume that we have unlimited resources, hardware/software/cash to throw at this. Can Informix handle a database of that size, with that many users and still give the performance desired? I'm asking this group because I personally have never worked with a system like the one described, but I'm hoping that someone out in Cyberspace has. I would really appreciate any insight on hardware, configurations, or pitfalls to look for. I'm very familiar with 5.X and 7.X Informix Engines and know what they are supposed to be able to do. What I'm searching for is someone that has actually tried or tested Informix (5,7 or 8) on a system of this size. Please feel free to email me directly or post to this group. Note: I'm sure that others out there would also like to hear about your VLDB experiences, so if you're not violating any confidentiality rules, please post to the group. Thanks in advance! Tracy P.S. I have left off the retention period for these items because it hasn't been determined yet. Any ideas? -- ========================================================================= = Tracy W.
