LINUX/PERL DBD

We downloaded the Informix Dynamic Server for Caldera Linux and have the server running. We plan to create a test database and have a programmer write some CGI code and he wants to user Perl DBI/DBD to access the Informix database on the Linux IDS server. He knows Perl and has accessed other DBMS using it. It looks like the application will be on one Linux machine and use Connect? to access the database on the database server Linux machine. We have a few questions to ask to help us get going. 1). Where do we get the Perl DBI/DBD? What is needed to interface with IDS? 2). Where do we get the Client SDK for Linux if we have IDS? (originally it was bundled on the SE CD, I think) 3) Do we need ESQL/C from the SDK for compiling the Perl stuff? Is this needed on the server machine as well as the client machine? 4) Can we use the Perl DBI/DBD where we may have up to 3 or 4 Linux application machine doing inserts into this test database concurrently? We are looking to see what we can do with the Informix/Linux toolset. Any suggestions that may make our "learning curve" easier is greatly appreciated :-))

Nothing else is needed to interface IDS on perl (except esql which is bundled with IDS for Linux) > 2). You need to link your perl binary statically and have enough Informix licenses for your clients. Then no esql should be necessary. If you link dynamically, at least the dll's are necessary. > 4) Can we use the Perl DBI/DBD where we may have up to 3 or 4 Linux > application machine doing inserts into this test database concurrently? > why not ? DBI/DBD is a regular Informix client. > We are looking to see what we can do with the Informix/Linux toolset. > Any suggestions that may make our "learning curve" easier is greatly > appreciated :-)) If you do mostly CGI/Web applications you might want to look into PHP. It's informix interface works nicely and creating web apps is much easier (and a lot faster) with php integrated into apache than with CGI.

All you need is ESQL/C to compile the module, and link the Perl if desired, and Informix Connect on the client machines to provide shared libraries and message files needed at runtime. Informix Connect should be on the SDK bundle with ESQL/C and is free in any event. If you need it for other clients than Linux just contact Intraware or Informix. > 2). The clients need either Connect -OR- ESQL/C (if they are being used to develop also ESQL/C is sufficient). > 4) Can we use the Perl DBI/DBD where we may have up to 3 or 4 Linux > application machine doing inserts into this test database concurrently? Sure. Physically no problem. A single CPU Linux box should be able to handle from dozens to about 100 users depending on the query/transaction mix. You only have to worry about the legalities of your number of users versus your license with Informix. > We are looking to see what we can do with the Informix/Linux toolset. Anything you want, within reason (it isn't going to walk the dog in the rain for you). > Any suggestions that may make our "learning curve" easier is greatly > appreciated :-)) Art S. Kagel

I-Connect is bundled with IDS 7.30.UC7, which is the server version you need, but CSDK is not; it is a separate download (but free). > > 3) Do we need ESQL/C from the SDK for compiling the Perl stuff? > > Is this needed on the server machine as well as the client > > machine? > > Depends. If you mess around copying pre-compiled Perl software to target machines, you only need I-Connect on the target machine. > > 4) Can we use the Perl DBI/DBD where we may have up to 3 or 4 > > Linux application machine doing inserts into this test > > database concurrently? > > why not ?
