For things like inserts and updates, there is a complete before and after image of the row. However, do not expect to get anything from these files in the event of a database crash. A client of mine had their database erased by some incompetent hardware people and didn't have a backup (they were assured after asking the hardware people a dozen times that what they were doing would in no way affect the database). We tried to roll-forward the database using the logfile, but it DID NOT work. After 40 hours of continuous work, I eventually wrote a C program to go through the log file and recreate the database. In otherwords, keep unloading the records. It's safer.
