restoring from level0+level1 backups
Posted in 2010
The poster had a level 0 plus a level 1 ontape backup (IDS 9.40) and wanted to restore/migrate it to another server, asking whether only selected dbspaces could be moved. Answers: ontape restores a whole instance, not individual databases or arbitrary dbspace subsets; for single databases use dbexport/dbimport, or archecker to extract individual tables from the archives. For the full restore, just start the level 0 restore as usual — at the end ontape prompts for a level 1 tape (then level 2, then logs); mount it and answer Y. The poster confirmed this answered his question.

Hi,
Can someone help please
This is my problem : I have one level 0 ontape backup, followed by a level 1
backup both made on an informix database. Let name this database 'dbase1'.
I plan to restore this dbase1 on another database on a second (other) server
I know I can do a cold backup on the second server : I used to do this kind of
backup from a level 0 backup to migrate a database from one box to another
My question are the following :
- How can I migrate database dbase1 on another server in cold backup mode
using these level 0 and level 1 backups ?
- Is'it possible to do a warm backup (using ontape -r -D dpspace_names) in
order to restore only few dbspaces from my backup (level 0 plus level 1) on
the second server (hosting a previously cloned dbspace of 'dbase1') ? In other
way is it possible to use ontape backup to migrate some (not all) dbspaces
from one database to another database ?
Thanks in advance
Not really, no. However, depending on your version of Informix (your REALLY
should post your platform and version details when you post) you can use the
archecker utility to extract the data for some of all tables from the
database(s) on those archive tapes and recreate the database on another
server inserting the data from the tapes. Archecker understands archive
levels.

Hi, Thanks a lot for your answer. My database is version 940FC6. I'm have to restore the database. I used to restore only from a level 0 backup. Now I have one level 0 backup plus one level 1 backup. Can you please tell me how to proceed to restore with these two backups Regards

At the end of a level 0 restore there is a prompt on screen asking if
you want to
restore any level 1 archives. If you say Y at this point it prompts to
load the level
1 tape and then asks to continue, at which point the level 1 will be
restored. At
the end of that restoreyou will be prompted for level 2, then for
logs. NOTE this
does restore the entire instance and not just individual databases
within it. To
do that you must either use Archecker to extract individual tables, or dbexport
from you source data and dbimport to your target instance.

Hi, I forgot, on the previous message to explain that I was about to do a complete restore of my database. So your answer is exactly what I expected. Thanks a lot Best regards

For future reference, a physical server can contain one or many Informix Instances (also called Engines, Servers) each of which have their own discrete disk space and memory allocation. It is at this degree of granularity that archiving operates. An Instance can contain one or many User Databases (in addition to the system databases). These can be exported/imported but no one can be connected while this happens. Finally a database contains one or many User Tables (in addition to system tables). These can be unload/loaded or extracted from archives (at certain IDS versions) uing the archecker facilities. Hope this helps the next time you have a question Keith
No problem! Just restore the level 0 like you always do. When the restore
of the level 0 completes ontape will prompt you for a level 1 tape if you
have any. Just "mount" the level 1 tape or file and reply 'Y'. Poof!
