Online 7 not updating config file?

We have a customer with Online 7.13 on a Sun Solaris system who reported the following behavior. Has anyone ever seen this before? Is it a bug, feature, operator error? Logs were changed (added or deleted) using the command line utilities. The engine reflected the changes until rebooted. It seems the changes were not stored in the onconfig file. When changes were made through onmonitor, everything stayed like it was supposed to... When changes were made by editing the file directly, everything stayed (naturally) ...
