Ouch! There is a seed of truth here, but it stretches across more than just Informix. At the Atlanta Informix Forum in December, we noted that the crowd was aging, and that there were few, if any, of the under 30 crowd. However, I noted the same thing at a recent .Net local users group meeting (supposedly a "new and hip" technology). The leader of the group (also a .Net/Micorsoft consultant) pointed it out to me. Here in the US, tech careers have a bad image. I think it is fallout from the tech bubble burst and overstated fear about tech outsourcing. In truth, there is more data to manage, more software to write, and more machines to administer. And it is not ever going all to Asia, Eastern Europe, or India. Software is still as much about people (users) as it is pure technology. In the US, at least, we need to re-energize students to consider and pursue tech careers - not just tech devices. Then again, a little shortage helps the salary and job security!
