Re: On-Line Perform. on RS6000

I've done some initial studies with our configuration: 980 (server) <--> 320's (clients) Database ~11 Gb - 450 tables - largest table ~4 million rows Some interesting things I've seen - Our biggest performance problems occur when indexes are not correct and/or the optimizer isn't optimizing, i.e. update statistics hasn't been run often enough. We've seen occurences of systems running ok at night with small numbers of users, but at exactly (ish) 9 am - the system going in the toilet because programs were going after tables that had an index dropped, etc. The best tools I've found from a performance standpoint are: sqlexplain (Good look at what the optimizer is doing) and tprof (good system tool that doesn't require a lot of doinking with trace-id's) I posted this to illicit some additional discussion on what others are doing related to this issue. As an aside - Has anyone else noticed/figured out why occasionally turbo's will be processing (tbstat shows R/B) and the cpu is idle (vmstat idle>70%). I've often wondered if theres some paramter in the engine that dictates when/why the engine dispatches process. Toodeley, Doodeley -------------- Craig csh@alert.com 303-488-7738
