Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Not a technical support thread but a news discussion: a poster linked to a report that IBM had invested in EnterpriseDB/PostgreSQL and joked about how many database products IBM now owns (DB2, U2, IDS, IMS, Cloudscape). Replies pointed to an InformationWeek piece speculating on IBM's motives (likely DB2's Oracle-compatibility features being cheaper to buy than build), mentioned Greenplum, and one poster praised PostgreSQL's open, multi-language stored-procedure interface versus Informix's closed approach. No technical problem or resolution is recorded — it's opinion and speculation only.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Fascinating. InformationWeek has some speculations as to the why:

To cut to the chase....
IBM is now an investor in to Postgress.
If Informix is the bastard step child what do you make of this?
Just how many databases does IBM want? DB2? U2? IDS? IMS? Cloudscape?
I'm losing count!
LOL :-)

Less then IBM invested in second life... And if you want to take my word on it,
it will be a better investment, although it will take a few versions of one
specific product before this will be clear for the public...
This of course is my personal opinion and has nothing to do to my employer
positions.

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...
Wow.
A stack of Open Source software...
I guess one *could* speculate that IBM is going to dump SWG and replace its propriety stack with OpenSource and then just sell services. :-P
All said tongue-n-cheek. :-)

I was confused when I saw Postgress.
It's PostgreSQL, not "Postgress".
And that's cool :)
For example, PostgreSQL already supports a hand of languages for
writing SPL, and it is an open interface so you can write your own, as
opposed to Informix, where everything is closed, even the features
that would benefit from being open.

Seems a reasonable explanation and perfectly in line with DB2's adoption
of "compatibility features."
My guess is that Serge's bosses found it easier, or less expensive, to
buy it rather than build it.
