Hello
On faculty in computer lab we use Informix for learning SQL. It is a
classic client/server setup where every student has its own database
somewhere in the depths of faculty computer network and with sql editor on
client side students are trying to do some thoughtful queries on those
databases.
What we want (by ļæ½weļæ½ I mean me and couple of my colleagues) is to have
same functionality on ours home computers. So I personally tried doing same
things with MySQL and Interbase but both of them suffer from complete sql
dialog incompatibility with things which we are used to do with Informix.
Not to mention that MySQL is a bitch to setup and administrate and most of
my colleagues would be lost in this process.
Fortunately I found out for http://www.iiug.org/ where they have trial
versions of Informix. Four our cause this is ideal solution but only
problem is that I have no idea how to install and use that piece of
software.
I downloaded: sepent.zip which is ļæ½INFORMIX-SE Personal Edition Version
7.25.TC3ļæ½. As far as I get it this is database engine. And I also
downloaded ssje_4.2_setup43.zip which is ļæ½Server Studio JEļæ½ and this
supposed to be some kind of all-in-one Informix interface (SQL editor and
administrating software).
I installed both of them but I cannot create and connect to database
server. There is a tool called setnet32 for creating registry setting of
server but whatever I do I always get some kind of error message while
connecting to server from dbaccess or ilogin.exe. Not to mention Server
Studio.
One of included manuals says that I have to install some ESQL/C or
ESQL/Cobol software but I donļæ½t have it and I donļæ½t know its purpose. I
spent hours tweaking various protocol/path/hosts/services variables but
with no success. This thing doesnļæ½t work.
All I need is some kind of comprehensive description of everything what I
need to have and install in order to fire up some local Informix server and
client editor on WindowsXP. Besides Informix SE I saw something called
Informix Dynamic server but it was to big to download (dial-up). Do I need
this? Isnļæ½t SE same thing but with less functionality?
Many thanks to you all..
Bariole,
Server Studio JE does not support Informix SE.
It supports:
- IBM Informix Online 5.10
- IBM Informix Dynamic Server 7.x, 9.x and 10.0 (latest version of
SSJE)
- IBM Informix XPS 8.3
Thank you,

As "garyok" says, Server Studio does not work with Standard Engine (SE), which
in any case has now largely been superseded by Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) and
does not have the full functionality, so you should download IDS-9.4-UC2 from
IIUG.
