I remember seeing that >256 byte figure somewhere in an Informix manual or Tech Notes article (maybe >I saw it in the old Informix 3.3 manual!). I routinely use char(500) for the WHERE text in CONSTRUCT statements with no problem. I went to 500 from 250 when a particularly complicated query-by-forms was failing. All I did was increase the char variable size and it worked (displaying the variable after the CONSTRUCT had shown the truncated WHERE clause). I've never been aware of a 256 byte limit on CONSTRUCTs, but maybe I've just been blythely ignorant. The stated max char size in our .03 and 4.1 manuals is our old friend, 32767. I've never tried a CONSTRUCT using a char variable that big, but they *do* work for us with char(500) under SunOS 4.1.x and I4GL .03F. I haven't had a chance to test a large WHERE clause under 4.1 yet.
