How do I get invisible character input?

I am working on developing a system that I need to be able to have users login before using informix. I need to only have one unix login for everyone, but once in the system, I need to write an informix login system. What is the best way to do this? I tried to set an attribute to invisible (I heard that would work but maybe not well) and it didn't do anything. I could still see exactly what I typed. A friend suggested that I read in one character at a time and then erase it. Can anyone think of any other way to do it? Just a little background, I am using a system called TASK (The Application Support Kit for Informix) which was developed by a couple of guys that I work around. TASK will take a table and create the code necessary for a generic system. It includes user protection. If I don't want a user to be able to add records or delete them or to even see them, I can lock that particular user out. But, their system is based on unix login. It reads the user that logs in. I can only have one login (for probably about 30 people or more). That is why I need to differentiate between one person and the others.
