Multiple Informix Servers on one hardware.

This question deals with the basic setup and implementation of Informix. A customer wishes to run multiple Informix servers on one hardware system. My question is can this be done physically and if so how do the clients connect to the right server? Are there any other problems associated with this approach? Thanks, Rich rcsaxon@aol.com

Each instance has its own environment; But note that more than one database may be in a single instance. Therefore if the issue is running more than one database on the same machine, then you have the choice of using a single instance (server) or multiple instances. FYI each instance has its own onconfig file, server (as represented in the sqlhosts file) and shared memory. > > the right server? Are there any other problems associated with this approach? There are probably different ways to handle connection. I am working with a client now that uses this method: o Each database has its own dedicated instance. I don't like this approach, but the software was written with the database name hard coded in everything. o Each database is serviced by a daemon process, that reads from a specific tcp port and connects to a specific database. Which database a daemon connects to is determine when the daemon starts up - the ONCONFIG and INFORMIXSER variables are set to the specific instance. So the method here is to adjust each daemons environment before kicking it off, so it will access the correct database and instance. > > > Thanks, > Rich > rcsaxon@aol.com
