Multiple Residency on Windows Informix 9.30 TC3

Hi,
Creating a second server instance on Informix 9.30 TC3 on Win Platform does it
gives fully freedom and isolation on the two instances?
As I can understand the two instances are fully independent (only the Informix
engine is common). I am asking because I want on the same server/machine to
have two different databases which will be working and manipulating
independed. When the one will be restored (using ontape -r command ) the
other one will be unaffected, online and fully operated?
I want to give a solution to the following problem.
I have a Production Server with one database (One informix server is
installed).
I have a Test Server with (One informix server is installed) and two different
databases. Very often the database from the Production Server is restored to
the Test Server. In order to do that I have to :
1) backup the second database on the Test server
2) restore (ontape -r) the Production database on the Test Server
3) exporting the new database (that one that comes from the Production) on
Test Server
4) restore the second database on the Test (that database that I took backup
on step1)
5) importing the new database (that from the step 3)
While all these are taking place the second database on Test is not available
and the Test server also is in not operated.
I suppose that using a second instance I will not have again the above
described problem?
Another question:
Does the Informix Dynamic Server 9.30 TC3 is supported for WindowsXP or
Windows2000? I am asking because on 9.30 Release is mentioned only WinNT and
Win2000. On the other hand on informix web page is mentioned only the 9.40
and 10 version
Any suggestions??
Thanks in Advance

So you can run it on Windows 2000 Server but not Windows 2000 Professional nor Windows XP. Charles Rutledge Centauri Computer Works centauri@pobox.com
Hi,
I'm not working with Windows (as IDS platform), but I think there's
no difference to UNIX.
Yes, you can operate many independent instances with one common
INFORMIXDIR (database binaries).
You need different onconfig files in the $INFORMIXDIR/etc , like
onconfig.tst1, onconfig.tst2
and the chunk path names (or data files) must be different.
When changing environment variables INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG you
can switch between the instances.
If you want to restore your production database to onconfig.tst1
(that instance must use the same names for chunk paths / data files
as the production system), there is no need to backup or shut down
the other instance onconfig.tst2 .

Andreas

The Windows port of IDS is very faithful to the Unix version, which can be madding for Windows admins that can't figure out the command line. Extrange... I can run IDS 9.3, 9.4, 10.0 on Windows XP without no problem. It's a development machine not Server one. J.
