There are several sources of information on online SQL syntax for OnLine available online. The most important is also the most obvious: see the Informix web pages at http://www.informix.com , where you can find .pdf files available for downloading (they may be in an area not accessable without a support contract.) There is a growing list of Informix documentation available in this way. You may order the Informix documentation on CD-ROM and run it from the CD or install it on a network or personal disk. (I have the docs on my laptop.) I think the "default" documentation set is now the CD-ROM. You can use the client-based program "SQL Editor", which is a part of the tool set that comes with some parts of the Informix Universal Server. It has a handy syntax checker which can verify the syntax without actually running the query against the database. In several directories under $INFORMIXDIR you can find examples of good SQL statements. It is very informative to examine the contents of the sysmaster.sql file. There are many other .sql files available. You can grep for the statements of interest on a unix-based system. Finally, you can check the web site and software archives of the IIUG (you *are* a member?) at http://www.iiug.org . You will find an extensive set of examples there.
