How to set configuration parameters to get maximum performance

Dear all, I'm facing a major performance problem with Informix 7.21 on a IBM RS 6000 two processor machine running AIX 4.1.5 and two RAID 5 subsystems with 4x4 GB each. Informix is placed on machines root device (4 GB mirrored). In addition we have to use Informix ESQL-COBOL API. So my questions to you are: does anybody have experience with such a configuration? I think using that RAID level will slow down performance but how much? I also think COBOL isn't the best language to use on an multi-processor machine. But there's no way out :-( Thanks in advance Volker.
