Karl Oliver could not start onmonitor on Linux with Informix 11.50.FC9, getting FORMS error 1170, terminal type unknown, though dbaccess worked. Jonathan Leffler suggested setting INFORMIXTERM, TERMCAP or TERMINFO, including TERMCAP=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/termcap, which fixed it. Art Kagel also suggested TERM=vt100. Solved.

You can try setting some of these variables:
INFORMIXTERM=terminfo # or termcapTERMCAP=/path/to/vt100-termcap
TERMINFO=/path/to/terminfo # with sub-directory v and file v/vt100
You might find TERMCAP=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/termcap works.

thanks Jonathan
TERMCAP=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/termcap
got it going
Set the TERM environment vsr to vt100 and try again.
