IDS support for RedHat
Posted in 2007
Neil Truby asked when IDS would be supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, since his customers wanted RHEL 5's bundled Cluster Manager/GFS to avoid extra licence costs. IBM staff replied that IDS 11.10 is certified on RHEL 5 per the machine notes, and that RHEL 5 certification for IDS 10 was also complete (done with 10.00.xC6) with the web pages still to be updated. Neil and another poster wanted to stay on 10.00.xC5 due to a bug in xC6; no definitive answer was given on xC5 support or an xC7 date, with Neil saying he'd ask UK support. Side discussion noted GFS isn't required for Red Hat Cluster Manager, though fencing is.

Does anyone know when IDS will be supported on RedHat AS 5, which has been the latest version for some months now? The continued absence of support for this version is costing some of our customers money, the reason being that the RedHat Cluster Manager software and Global File System softwareare included in AS 5, but have to be purchased separately (and in the case of GFS it's about '1,200 per node), which adds to the cost of an Informix cluster, possibly unnecessarily. Thanks for the info, Andreas/Sandor. I was indeed taking it from the Website, not the Release Notes. I won't be recommending v11 for customers with mission-critical systems just yet, so am stuck with 10.0xC5. Are you 100% certain that if I place a support call for IDS 10 on RHEL AS 5 I won't be told by UK or Australia Tech Support that this is not a supported platform? -- Neil Truby t:01932 724027 Director m:07798 811708 Ardenta Limited e:neil.truby@ardenta.com "Sandor Szabo" <sandor.szabo@de.ibm.com> wrote in message news:mailman.499.1185355072.13675.informix-list@iiug.org... Are you able to confirm that we would not be refused support for xC5 on RHEL AS 5? thx
You don't need GFS to run Cluster Mangler. It will work fine without it. But you will need to make sure to have fencing set up or RHCM will not work at all. I don't think AS5 pushes you into GFS, that would be one big reason for me not to use it, since we have Cluster Mangler running fine on earlier releases on ext3 file systems. And I thought AS5 just came out, but maybe I'm confused, what with all their versions. You should definitely document what you do for this as it'd be a great presentation for others to learn from. RHCM is a bit buggy but the price is a lot better than other products out there. I'd also be curious to see it set up on a different distro if that's possible, haven't tried that one. You can actually set it up on a Fedora Core 7 system ( free and free updates ) to get it working and play with it without having to buy more AS5 licenses. There's a bit of confusion here. AS5 = Advanced Server 5 RHEL5 = Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 I know these are distinctly different beasts. The problem is compounded even more by the latest reversioning ( is reversioning even a word? :-) of the Red Hat server products. Even a score card does not seem to help. We have AS5 in house yet I don't see it on the RH web site. They are definitely confusing. We too are in the same situation. That is to say, we really need to upgrade to RHEL 5, but are holding back from upgrading IDS 10.xC6 for the same worrisome bug and it is too soon to for us to recommend an upgrade to IDS 11. Will 10.xC5 be supported on RHEL 5 and/or when will 10.xC7 be available?
