Online & multiple DB's

We currently have the SE engine, and would like to be able
to querry two databases at the same time. As I understand
it we must open database 1, perform our sql routines into
memory or temp tables, then open database 2 and do similar
types of actions. This is OK, we understand why, and we don't
have any particular problems with it.
My question is:
If we went to the Online Engine, and if our two(or more) databases
were in the same dbspace(s), could we do queries that join two
or more databases/tables together?
select database1.table_a.col1, database2.table_b.col1
from database1.table_a, database2.table_b
where database1.table_a.col0 = database2.table_b.col0
Must we have STAR to do this?
This all assumes a single cpu.
Thanks,
