Kate, this may just be a typo but did you really enter the statement exactly as above? Then you forgot to put a comma between "col1" and "col2", resulting in "col2" becoming an alias for "col1". If, however, you did indeed enter the statement with the comma, then I have no idea why the described behaviour occurs, other than maybe you might have used reserved words as actual column or table names.
