RE: Confirm backups

Archecker does not guarantee that you can restore from a backup tape. I used to work at a company where I did an archecker after each backup. The archecker told me the backups were good in every way. My Unix administrator had changed the tape block size to 1024 in AIX (smit) when I had the Informix configuration at 512. The archecker continued to say the backups were perfect. I tried to restore the backup on an identical machine set up the same way without success. The restore would just go on and on and on. (24 - 48 hours). I guess if I had a few weeks it might have finished. The minute I changed the tape block size to 1024 in Informix and created an archive the restore worked perfectly. Basically the only way you can be 100% sure is by periodically restoring the backups. -----Original Message----- From: Obnoxio The Clown [mailto:obnoxio@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 1999 6:15 AM To: Paul.Watson@gmaccc.co.uk; djw@smooth1.demon.co.uk; informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Confirm backups From: Paul Watson <Paul.Watson@gmaccc.co.uk> > > > >IDS 7.3x comes with archecker which is a utility that can verify an > > >archive for internal consistency to make sure that nothing needed to > > >have a successful restore is missing.
