Performance problems

Is there somebody who knows something about the SELECT-NEXT-statement of the database ADABAS (or DDB/4)? I have got very big performance problems when I realize it in informix-SQL because I have to declare a cursor and use many AND's and OR's in the WHERE-clause, just to retrieve a single row.
