There is no intrinsic reason why you can't have a /usr/informix/se to store your SEm and /usr/informix/4gl for I4GL -- they are two separate values for INFORMIXDIR, of course, and it is coincidence that they are both under /usr/informix, the default location for Informix software. As a matter of idle fact, I use a variant on that for handling multiple versions of the software: /work4/informix/IDS-7.30.UC1 /work4/informix/IDS-7.31.UC1 /work4/informix/Tools-7.20.UD1 (I4GL and ISQL) /work4/informix/Tools-7.30.UC1 /work4/informix/CSDK-2.10.UC1 /work4/informix/CSDK-2.20.UC1 /work4/informix/CSDK-2.30.UC1 However, you do need to ensure that the I4GL applications have access to the server. What I do is use the tools in utils_jl (available from the IIUG web site at http://www.iiug.org) to manufacture a working INFORMIXDIR from the various bits. I might run, for example: ixcreate -L /usr/informix/7.31.UC1 -R /work4/informix/IDS-7.31.UC1 ixcreate -L /usr/informix/7.31.UC7 -R /work4/informix/CSDK-2.30.UC1 ixcreate -L /usr/informix/7.31.UC7 -R /work4/informix/Tools-7.30.UC1 This should create /usr/infomrix/7.31.UC7 as a full INFORMIXDIR, but every 'file' is a symlink to the real file in the /work4 area. I would then create /usr/informix/7.31.UC7/etc/sqlhosts and and appropriate onconfig file, and I would use /usr/informix/7.31.UC7 as my INFORMIXDIR. Any time I want to change the product set, I can backup the files like sqlhosts and onconfig, remove the rest of /usr/informix/7.31.UC7, and then start over. If you don't want to use that technique, then you are going to find it more difficult. If you are prepared to run an sqlexecd and use sesoctcp connections, then you can arrange for your /usr/informix/4gl to contain an sqlhosts entry for the SE running out of /usr/informix/se. If you want to use seipcpip, then I think you will need SE and I4GL installed in the same INFORMIXDIR; although you could use /usr/informix/se/lib/sqlexec in the fourth field of the sqlhosts file in /usr/informix/4gl/etc, the program would not find the correct versions of all its message files (probably), and so it would fail. You might get away with it; I4GL does provide a number of the server message files, but I would not want to rely on it. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.62 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
