Some tests that some of us have done lately are pointing to an advantage in combining disk striping with fragmentation. That is, create your raw logical volumes by striping them across your disks, then fragment your table across those logical volumes. Now many of you will cry, "thrashing!" at this suggestion, and I admit that I would tend to do so too. But it would seem that the throughput gained by using this method is more than compensation for the increased head movement it is likely to cause.
