Informix Replication in release 6.0

Greetings, We are planning to use Informix replication to provide a high availability set up. The idea is to use the replicated database ar a R/W database when the primary fails. My questions are: Can the switchover be made automatic? How long are the databases unavailable? Are there any Informix customers out there who have used replication in the manner described?
