I've received several notices via my 4Js newsletter than online workgroup server is being discontinued and we will be forced into the larger, very expensive, dynamic server. Any truth in this?

Dropping NT as a platform. I was shocked after the time it took for Informix to port Online to NT and the price reduction deal they did to gain market share when it came out. Surely most NT server which run Online only support up to 32 users, hence Workgroup Server with it's reduced price is the main Informix Database Server product. This implies Informix are moving out of the bulk of the NT server market (Informix did say a while back that they were going to move towards the top end of the market). Perhaps with the commitment to Linux and the fact that even Microsoft are rumoured to be look at NT that Informix see Linux as replacing NT? if the rumour about Microsoft looking at Linux is true perhaps Microsoft will phase out NT in the end? (I heard NT 5 is behind schedule and has 40 million line of code, hard to get it all working!). >Does anyone else know anything about this as I'm sure it affects most >people who have ported their 4GL application to NT. No but I am surprised. There is nothing on Informix's Web Site yet... I would verify this as it could just be that the supplier is out of stock, cannot fill the order now and there has been a Simple communication breakdown somewhere... >-- >John Rooke >Director >L&P Systems Limited >john.rooke@lpsystems.com >-- >Rob Wilson >rwilson@ntsource.com > -- David Williams

Informix back in July decided to stop porting IDS WGS. It was a topic at the Informix conference I know. For some platforms 7.30 is the last port, for others 7.31 is the last. It was my understanding that this is for Unix and NT. The full blown IDS (non work group edition) will still be available for NT. I think people are getting IDS WGS and IDS confused. I have heard that a WGS (work group server) port of 9.2 may become available in mid to late November but who knows. I unfortunately have IDS WGS 7.30.UC2.1 on SCO Unixware 7.x and I would love to see a 7.31. But speaking to Informix is like taking to a wall sometimes.
