Universe 9.6 upgrade - What can you tell me?
Posted in 2001
A user on AIX 4.3.3 (RS/6000, wIntegrate 4.1) asked whether to upgrade UniVerse 9.5.x to 9.6 for the new GUI editor/debugger, after hearing of post-upgrade problems on the informix-mv list. Replies confirmed 9.6 was on controlled release with acknowledged bugs, that few sites had upgraded, and that little documentation or vendor response was available. Others pointed him to the informix-mv mailing list (he was already on it) and urged setting up a cheap test box rather than upgrading production blind; one poster noted 9.6.1.1 was pulled to controlled release and advised getting 9.6.1.3. No definitive resolution is recorded.

We were looking into upgrading to Universe 9.6 (from 9.5.x), mostly to take advantage of the new GUI editor and debugger. We were all ready to go and then I found a number of people on the informix-mv list who had problems after upgrading to it. One person had a similar setup to our own. We have an RS/6000 using Unix AIX version 4.3.3. and wIntergrate 4.1. It seems that there just might be some platform bugs in this version. I don't plan on pushing for an upgrade anytime soon until I'm sure were not going to run into problems. Any and all info regarding a Universe 9.6 upgrade (Pro or Con) and/or the new GUI editor/debugger would be appreciated. Thanks. "I use to be an Optimist until I knocked over the glass." Update: (Info from elsewhere) I'm beginning to see that not to many have upgraded yet. Most who have tried had problems. However, there were some that only had a little trouble but were finally able to get 9.6 up and running. They too are also asking questions about the new features in this version and how to get them to work and how to use them. They, like me, are not finding much information or help either. I got this response from informix after my rant about what little help I, and a number of other, did not seem to be getting from informix. ----- start Ray Wurlod wrote: Maybe you should ask Informix, as well as this list. Not everyone in Informix has yet had the opportunity to play with 9.6; which partly explains the silence. Also, it's on controlled release, which means that the company has acknowledged that there are bugs, and will release it formally once those are fixed. So please be patient. As well as helping this list we do have to earn a living. And the company restructure is more than a bit of a distraction just at present! ----- end I did send emails to informix for detail info but have yet to get a response. (From early Dec) It's starting to sound like they released this version far to soon and are now just trying to clean it up. "I use to be an Optimist until I knocked over the glass." Are there any Universe Users out there? I would have hoped to find even more in this group then the PICK one. "I use to be an Optimist until I knocked over the glass." Randy Smith Programmer/Analyst http://www.4uga.com Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
I am a former Universe DBA, but but that won't help to much on questions about current versions, there is an excellent mailing list. If you want to try it out informix-mv-subscribe@oliver.com is how to subscribe(or at least how it used to be) There is a bit of Off-topic buzz, but that's fun too :) Will In article <949int$dkm$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, randy_lee_smith@my-deja.com wrote: > Are there any Universe Users out there? > > I would have hoped to find even more in this group then the PICK one. > > "I use to be an Optimist until I knocked over the glass." > > Randy Smith Programmer/Analyst > http://www.4uga.com > > Sent via Deja.com > http://www.deja.com/ > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Thanks Will, but I've been on that list for some time already. Lately the mailing list has not been of much help for people in my shoes. There are more of use asking questions then those that are answering them. I think most of us what someone else to jump in first before we do. Some can do this easily because they have test boxes. Others, like myself, don't have that luxury. We need to be able to update to the new version with no problems in a small amount of time. I do realize this is a lot to ask of an Ardent product. Oh well maybe it will be safe to upgrade to 9.6 when version 29.3 is out. :) In article <94cm8l$tg1$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, William Rice <ricew@operamail.com> wrote: > I am a former Universe DBA, but but that won't help to much on > questions about current versions, there is an excellent mailing list. > > If you want to try it out informix-mv-subscribe@oliver.com is how to > subscribe(or at least how it used to be) There is a bit of Off-topic > buzz, but that's fun too :) > > Will Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Well, if what you are looking for is someone else to assume all the financial burden of putting up a test box, paying the salaries of the staff to do the test and verification, and then guarentee you a risk free upgrade, I doubt you will find it here, either.
I hate to jump in on this, but... I would strongly suggest that if you don't have the luxury of having a test box to test software on, that you at least find a backup job. In this time of REALLY cheap iron, how can someone say they don't have the luxury of a test machine which can cost less than the price of a good weekend out of town? If one takes chances (and Operating Environments are incredibly complicated beasts), one will get bitten. It wasn't that many years ago (ok 10) that one could get an upgrade tape from a MAJOR vendor, do the backup with 2 copies, verify the copy and attempt a restore and have it NOT be able to restore. If your company can afford a few days of down time while you reload your OS and then reload Universe and then reload your data, you are sitting in the catbird seat. On the other hand.... Make sure you have got Universe 9.6.1.3 as 9.6.1.1 is now under controlled release due to 'problems' -- Telegram Sam You know who I am? <randy_lee_smith@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:94hhq0$jgj$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > Thanks Will, but I've been on that list for some time already. > > Lately the mailing list has not been of much help for people in my > shoes.
