Gene,
I can't find my stuff/scripts we used back then.... probably
archived/deleted during "clean the system" time.
=20
I did a google on 'expect scripting' and found a lot.... this site
looks good: http://expect.nist.gov/

I am in the same boat you were in years ago. I have run into the 2gb
file size limit. Could you please share your expect scripts?

Thanks,
Gene

OS: AIX 4.3.3
Informix: 7.23

PS. Soon to be 7.32 AIX 5.2. Would be 9.4 but cost $18,000 :).

I totally agree with Martin.... The attentive DBA should be making sure
the backups are successful. Should that happen to be the responsibility
of some overnight helpdesk, then the DBA should work with those folks to
educate them on the process.
But anyway... You might want to look into expect scripts....
If you fired off the backup inside an expect script, you could have the
expect script manage the response be it ""please insert the next tape
and press return" or something else. I know it works, we did it for
several years for our hotsite when we had onarchive.
Thanks,
NJ

Right.
BTW: the attentive Informix System Administrator would immediately
notice any problems with the archiving operation, because
he would see the messages about archives aborted or not
successfully completed in the server's message log file ...
[ soap box:
I once got a call from a consultant asking how a damaged IDS
(root dbspace overwritten) can be repaired. My answer was:
"restore", and his reply was that he knows.
The customer was changing archive tapes every evening for
the scripted archiving during the night. They set aside a weekly
archive tape, and they put into long-time storage a monthly tape.
So the customer was best prepared for restore.
The only problem was, that all tapes were empty. Further
investigation revealed, that despite all tape changing activity, the
ontape script never was run, as the IDS message log did not
contain any messages about archive activity. So this customer
had to "recover" from a dbexport that was done more than a
year ago ...
]
Regards,
Martin
