testing "picture" fields?

I need to write a PERFORM instruction that tests a "picture" field for changes to the existing data: ATTRIBUTE: colP = tableA.pic_field, picture = "XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX"; On editadd editupdate of tableA, I save the existing entry for this column to a displayonly field then compare this "old" value to whatever change the user has entered when s/he is done with data entry. I want to detect this data change in the form and NOT with a trigger on tableA! Any of the "XXXXX" sections may have an entry and I can't find the right combination of tests that detects changes! e.g. detect the change: old_pic_field = "12345- - - - " pic_field = " - - - - " Running INFORMIX-SQL Version 4.14.UC1 on HPUX 9.05 Suggestions greatly appreciated!
