TEXT data type usage

Arrrg. I am converting a Watcom DB to Informix. The front-end is Powerbuilder. In Watcom a Varchar (same as Informix TEXT) is updated just like any Char field. Under Informix the TEXT field cannot be set equal to a string... Does anyone use the TEXT datatype? Any pointers on how best to use it? From Powerbuilder?
