JDBC : Function Calls in SQL

I am using Informix JDBC Driver 2.0 connecting to Informix Dynamic Server 7.3 . Whenever i try to use any functions in a SQL statement i get an error that routine not resolved. I tried using the Escape Sequence but it also failed. How can i use functions in my SQL statement. I am using prepareStatement & executeQuery methods.
