We are looking at migrating our databases to Informix. We are a rapidly growing .com portal with intensive web based transaction processing on the horizon. What would be the pros and cons of going with Free BSD? We are not interested in NT and we don't want to pay for Solaris. Any recommendations? Thanks

Informix does not have a specific FreeBSD port, only the Linux port which may or may not run properly. So either go with Linux or use FreeBSD for your portal and locate the Informix database server on a Linux host and access its databases remotely over 100BaseT or FDDI. Art S. Kagel
Todd, Presuming that your offices and information workers will not be using Linux/FreeBSD on their desktops, you may also consider using OpenLink Software's JDBC/ODBC/UDBC drivers. This will give you the functionality of bringing your Linux/FreeBSD-Informix information anywhere within your enterprise via the same interface, lowering the learning curve and allowing you to utilize any of the three data access mechanisms at once or individually. Please visit http://www.openlinksw.com if you are interested. BTW - OpenLink's drivers should come bundled with Red Hat Linux v6.0 distributions. -- Thanks, Edward A.
