Informix et al.

I have been a "lurker" here for some time, being merely an MS-DOS user, and I am having trouble seeing the advantage of any of the discussed programs over a LAN-based Database program. There seems to be little support from the originating company, and many potentially disasterous things which can bring down a system. Have I missed all the accolades, or are there big advantages to WingZ, Informix and the rest that looking at the "complaint line" would not be brought up? I was told that learning Informix would be the smartest software decision I could make, and now I am wondering about the person who advised me to do so. ?????
