If for some unfathomable reason, you can't change that - why not temporarily change /dev/null to be a regular file right before the script runs, then move it and recreate /dev/null properly. That might not be practical if there's a lot of other stuff going there at the same time though. Have you at least kicked somebody in the ass for sending output to /dev/null?
