ontape dubts
Posted in 2009
A user setting up ontape backups on IDS 9.4 (Windows) asked what TAPESIZE to use for DAT72 tapes, whether one shared log tape plus daily level-0s was sensible, and why 'ontape -a' didn't seem to free logs. Replies: set TAPESIZE to roughly the tape capacity in KB (e.g. ~72,000,000, or less than the real capacity); use 'ontape -c' for continuous logical-log backup, stopping it before the level-0 and restarting on a fresh tape afterwards; 'ontape -a' only backs up dirty logs once and exits, though it can be driven from ALARMPROGRAM instead. Keep paired archive/log tapes (about two weeks of logs) so an older archive can still be rolled forward. Level-0 archives can be taken online with users connected.

Hi to everyone,
I´m implementing a ontape backup system on Informix IDS 9.4 but I have
several questions:
I) I use DAT72 tapes. Which is the right TAPESIZE I must write to onconfig?
II) I suppose to do one tape per each weekday to do the level 0 (zero) using
"ontape -s -L 0" command and only one tape to do automatic log's backup
using "ontape -a". So I will have 6 (Monday yo Saturday) tapes to do level
zero backups and only one to do log's backup. After each level zero backup I
will put the same log's backup tape of the last day.
I tried it but it seems to me that the ontape -a does not move logs and
the informix logs fill up quickly.
Is it correct to use ontape -c?
Thanks in advance for all your answers.
Regards,
Pedro Ivo

You can do something like this:
Monday - create level 0 archive (ontape -s -L 0) on tape "MonArc" and
after that start continous logical log backup (ontape -c) on tape "MonLogs"
Tuesday - the same procedure with tapes "TueArc" and "TueLogs"
Wednesday - the same procedure; tapes "WedArc" and "WedLogs"
...
Saturday - the same procedure, tapes "SatArc" and "SatLogs"
As you can see, you need 6*2 tapes (i.e. 12)
Or you can use e.g. 3 pairs of tapes and use it round robin:
Create archive on tape "1Arc" and continous logical log backup on tape
"1Log"
The same procedure; tapes "2Arc" and "2Log"
The same procedure; tapes "3Arc" and "3Log"
Then, again, 1st pair of tapes.
Yes, it is more than correct to use continous logical log backup.

Thanks Hrvoje Zokovic.
But, when I create the level 0 at Tuesday the logs at "1LOG" will no more
necessary because they actions will already be stored on the tables at
"2Arc", am I right? So why I need also to do a logs backup daily?
I forgot to say that I'm using Informix on a Windows 2003 server.

TAPESIZE 72000000 # Maximum amount of data to put on tape
You could go a bit higher, I'd expect.

Yup, just remember to stop the ontape -c, before you start the ontape -s and
restart it with a new tape when you're done with the full backup. You'll also
need to watch for when you may need to change tapes if a log tape fills up
during continuous log backup.

ontape -c starts continuous logical log backup. The tape file is kept openand ontape runs continuously. Whenever a logical log fills it is copied to
the tape and freed (assuming there are no open transactions in it at the
time).
ontape -a starts an instantaneous logical log backup. It copies any dirtylogs to tape and exits. You can use this command through the ALARMPROGRAM
to emulate a continuous logical log backup without tying up a tape drive or
depending on the ontape -c to not be interrupted. See my package utils3_ak
for example script and executable ALARMPROGRAMs.

Hi,
May I do the level zero backup ("ontape -s -L 0") with people connected to
the database? I did not find it on any book.
Regards,
Pedro Ivo
--001636920027ff485a046545050f
You can do all levels of backup with people connected to the database.
The backup image will contain a snapshot of the system at the instant you
started the backup.
If you restore you can apply the logical logs generated after that instant.
If there are any open transactions after you restore Level 0 + Level 1 (if
any) + Level 2 (if any) + Logical logs (if any) those transactions will be
rollback and the system will return to a consistent stage.
Regards.

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

You always need two weeks worth of logical logs. If the most recent archive
is not usable for some reason you can always use the previous archive and
roll forward two week's worth of logical logs from the two log tapes.

Absolutely! Informix was the first database to permit live, completely
online archives back in 1990.

Pedro Ivo ... (reading your name, I guess you read portuguese, if not, please
tell me).
terceira .... fita qundo for executado o ontape -s -L 0.
Se vc tiver outra fita (tipo FITADAT) para a qual vc possa direcionar o
'continuous log' melhor ainda.
O ideal é vc ter backup log de pelo menos 3 archives , para garantir restore.
Best regards. Roberto FErronato
