NewEra and 3D controls

Has anyone succeeded in using the ctl3dv2.dll and subclassing individual controls in a NewEra program? I can get the controls in a window to draw in 3D, but whenever you put another window, like File Manager, on top of the NewEra guy, and then bring the NewEra guy to the front, the 3D control's backgrounds don't get redrawn properly. I've tried saving the old window proc., putting my own in there that handles WM_CTLCOLOR like the docs on ctl3d say, and then calling the saved window proc. at the end of my new proc, but it just doesn't seem to work.
