Directory feature of IDS 11
Posted in 2008
A user on IDS 11.10/Solaris 10 used ontape's new "backup logical logs to a directory" feature and restored a level 0 plus logs successfully, but ontape rolled forward every log in the directory; he asked how to stop at a given time or log number (e.g. stop after 1591). Replies: ontape has no point-in-time restore — use onbar with -t (or archecker for table-level restores). As a practical workaround, Davis Kwong noted ontape stops when the next expected log filename is missing, so simply renaming (or moving away) the file for log 1592 ends the rollforward at 1591.

Hello ALL ! IDS 11.10 solaris 10 I tried the log backup to directory feature introduced in IDS 11 & it works very well. also tried to restore level 0 with logical logs (level 0 and logical logs files created using directory feature) the level 0 restoration completed and the roll forward of log started from the required log and then applying all the next logs present in that directory. Continue restore? (y/n)y Do you want to back up the logs? (y/n)n Restore a level 1 archive (y/n) n Do you want to restore log tapes? (y/n)y Roll forward should start with log number 1588 Restore file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001588 and press Return to continue ... Rollforward log file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001588 ... Rollforward log file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001589 ... Rollforward log file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001590 ... Rollforward log file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001591 ... Rollforward log file /usr/informix/logicallog/vikas_2_Log0000001592 ... Program over. I want to know the procedure in order to do a time based recovery. ie if i just want to do the recovery untill some specific time or a log number say 1591 and dont want to apply the log 1592 for the recovery. Please guide ! Regards, vikas.
Ontape doesn't support point in time restore. You would have to use onbar
to do Point-in-Time restore.

As mentioned onbar is the tool for this, however, my 2 cent worth advice would
be to try keeping desired logs in that directory i.e log files from 1588 to
1591 (move log files 1592 onwards to some other location). Using onbar you can
specify point in time using -t option.

You can try ARCHECKER, but it is a table based way to do that. Instead of moving the log files 1592 onwards to another location, you c=
an
just rename the one file <hostname>_<servernum>_Log0000001592 to someth=
ing
else.
The way it works is that ontape to directory will generate the target
filename of the next log file to restore, As soon as it can not read th=
at
target filename, it will assume that it has reached the end of the log
files in that directory and finish logical recovery.
Thanks. Davis.
