I-Net has two purposes and is used on both the client and server.
1) It is required on the server when you are using the Informix-SE database.
It turns SE into a network database server.
2) It also is the client software that goes on a workstation to allow you
to connect to either or both an Informix Online or SE Database server.
> When do we need informix-star ?
You need I-Star on the server with Informix-Online. It turns Online
into a network database server.

This file is part of your system network setup and should contain an entry
for each database server and a unique tcp/ip service number. It has 3 fields
seperated by spaces, network service name, port number and an optional alias.
The following is an example from one of mine:
# Field1 Field2 Field3 ## I leave field 3 blank
sqlexec 1525/tcp ## Informix SE database server
online1 1526/tcp ## Informix Online - 1st one
online2 1527/tcp ## Informix Online - 2ed one
One this machine I run SE and two onlines, total 3 databases servers. This same
entries are needed on the clients and server.
> $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts
This file maps database servers to network services. It has four fields,
database server, net type, hostname, network service. The following is an
example.
#Field1 Field2 Field3 Field4
viking sescotcp viking sqlexec ## Informix SE database server
online1 olscotcp viking online1 ## Informix Online - 1st one
online2 olscotcp viking online2 ## Informix Online - 2ed one
Field1 has my host name for the SE database and the dbserver name from
the tbconfig file for the online databases. Field 2 is discribed in
the Informix-Net/Star manual on page 21. The se = SE and ol = Online, the
sco = sockets and tcp = tcp/ip. Your values will depend on your network.
Field 3 is the hostname of the database server. Field 4 is the network
service and must match what is in /etc/services.

This is used on a UNIX client for the client to connect
to a remote database. The UNIX client needs the relay module
and SQLRM tells it where the file is. The client also needs some
tools (isql or dbaccess, 4gl...)
The client process is something like this. If the SQLRM variable is set
the tools connect to the Relay Module instead of sqlexec or sqlturbo.
If the SQLRM is not set the tools look for a database server on the
local machine.

I-Net and I-Star should be at the same release as Online for
everything to work well
> variables: INFORMIXDIR=/logiciels/informix

This should be sqlturbo on the server since you are using online. On
the client I usely do not set it. ( I have one site running Online/Secure
5.0 and the clients will not work unles it is set to sqlexec on the
clients... anyone want to tell me why? )

OK

This needs to be set on the clients.

I recommend creating it for the clients and server.

This needs to be set the same on both the client and server.

The following is a checklist I use to debug this on my sites:
On the server::
1. $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts
Field 1 - Is it the same as the dbserver name in the tbconfig? or
the hostname for an SE database server?
Field 2 - See the manual pg 21
Field 3 - Is this the hostname?
Field 4 - Is this the same as field 1 in the /ect/services?
2. /etc/services
Field 1 - Is this the same as field 4 in sqlhosts?
Field 2 - Is the port number unique in the /etc/services file
Field 3 - Not needed
3. /etc/rhosts
Is there an entry so the user on the client can rlogin in with
out a password. Does the user have an entry in the password
file?
4. sqlexecd
Has the I-NET/I-Star program been started? Try ps -ef | grep sqlexecd
to see if it is running. Put something like this in the /etc/rc.???
file to automatically start I-Star.
INFORMIXDIR=/usr/informix; export INFORMIXDIR
PATH=$INFORMIXDIR/bin; export PATH SQLEXEC=sqlturbo; export SQLEXEC
TBCONFIG=tbconfig.1
# start I-Star for online1
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd online1 -l log_file_path_1
TBCONFIG=tbconfig.2
# start I-Star for online2
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd online2 -l log_file_path_2
# start I-Net for SE database server
SQLEXEC=sqlexec
$INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd -l log_file_path_se
On the client workstations:
1. $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts
Is this file the same as one the server?
2. /etc/services
Are the Informix entries the same as one the server?
3. Check rlogin ( /etc/rhosts)
Can the user rlogin into the server without giving a password?
This is needed for online to work.
4. Check envirement variables:
INFORMIXDIR=/location_of_informix_files
PATH=$INFORMIXDIR/bin:$PATH
SQLRM=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlrmsoctcp
This may depend on your installation - check page 26
of the I-NET 5.0 installation Guide
SQLEXEC=sqlexec
(For 5.0 Online/Secure only ?? otherwise
unset it)
DBPATH=//online1://online2://viking/u/se_data
This lists the two online database servers and
the directory where I put most of the SE databases
so when I do dbaccess->select->database, I get a
list of all the databases one the server.
I hope this helps, Please describe whats on the clients and whats on
the server if you need more info. If you have DOS clinets the
set-up is different from Unix clients.
