Help! Can't start isql as non-root user.

Ok. We've been using INFORMIX-SE and INFORMIX-SQL 4.00.UE1 for Interactive
86/ix ("INTER./IX 386 2.2" is the label on the disk), but we're now going
to Solaris x86 2.4. I've installed the SE and SQL software on our Solaris x86
system, and it seems to work fine as root, but I get the following error when
starting isql as a non-root user:
INFORMIX-SQL Version 4.00.UE1
Copyright (C) 1984-1989 Informix Software, Inc.
All Rights Reserved
Software Serial Number LEX#F172380
350: Index already exists on column.
And then the program exits.
What index? What column? Is it trying to create an index on a data
dictionary table (or whatever informix calls that)?
Any ideas? I thought it might be a permissions problem somewhere, but the
install programs set ownership and group permissions identical to our
386/ix system. How can I troubleshoot this?
Sorry, I'm a bit new to Informix. I'm used to working with Oracle 7
(no flames please).
Thanks in advance.
