CURRENT does not work!

I am running 7.1 online on SCO ODT 3.2v4.2, and am experiencing an interesting problem. When I assign "CURRENT" to a variable, the display its contents, I get "0000-00-00 00:00:00". Today and time work just fine. Any ideas? stevie
