Maybe you missed the entries in the system catalog? Files in a
database directory (linked or not) are ignored by SE if they are not
registered in the catalog tables.
The only names recognised directly are the system catalog files
themselves (sys*.dat and sys*.idx).
I guess linking files and manually inserting the corresponding entries
in the system catalogs would be dangerous at least. Separate entries
(one for each database) would point to the same file. It should crash
on the first occasion of ALTER TABLE (SE files are renamed then).
