Unknown version of Informix: how do I access tables?

I have a cpio backup of an Informix SE database which was created using an unknown version of Informix. I need to access the data on two of the tables, for which I have the definitions. I have restored the database files successfully to disk, but was unable to select from the tables using the Informix version I have available, 4.10 - system errors with core dump! I then tried creating a new database with two empty tables using the table definitions, and then used system commands to copy the two .dat files containing the data over the empty ones.
