Long connection delay w/ IDS 11.50.FC2 on Solaris
Posted in 2009
After upgrading to IDS 11.50.FC2 on Solaris 10, users reported very slow database connections over both TLI and shared memory (one poster saw ~1 second, another saw delays of 10-30 minutes once a database was selected; plain 'dbaccess - -' connected instantly). Suggestions included a known dropped-connection bug fixed in 11.10.UC2W4/FC3, DNS reverse-lookup problems, and testing different NETTYPEs/IP vs hostname; IBM support said no matching open defect existed for 11.50. One poster largely fixed his case (0.9s down to 0.16s) by rebuilding sysmaster with $INFORMIXDIR/etc/buildsmi, suspecting connections during migration corrupted it. The original poster's multi-minute delays are left unresolved in the thread.

I just yesterday opened a case with IBM regarding this very same issue!!!. My times are around 1 second. We are waiting for their answer. Fortunately it is happening in a not critical instance. I suspect something we've both missed in the release notes --- I've
scoured them with no clues.
I did wonder about the new security setting but disabling this and
restarting the engine didn't work.
My connections seem to take about 10 minutes; dbaccess - - connects
instantly but doing something that selects a database hangs.

Hi Nike Did your server have some "dropped connections" before experiencing long wait time? There was a bug related to "dropped connectons causing long wait". This bug has been fixed in 11.50UC2W4. Please let me know if you saw slow connections against a fresh server. We saw the same behavior in 11.10.FC2W4. At least .8 seconds to open a
connection with dbaccess. Also happened with dbschema. Got a patch
that fixed this in 11.10.FC3. Maybe the bug is back in 11.50.FC2?

We ran into a similar issue in a much older version - IDS 7.31. Our issue
turned out being that the application was coming through Citrix servers which
were in a subnet that had reverse lookups disabled. This even affected
connections to dbaccess from the command line on the database server. Once
connected, performance was great - mostly because the majority of users were
not connected and working. As soon as reverse lookups were enabled on the
subnet, the problem immediately went away. Of course it took several days to
determine the cause.
This is certainly not the same upgrade scenario you are discussing, but if
other seemingly unrelated DNS changes have been made recently, this could be
the issue.

There is no open or closed bug regarding connection slow against ids 11.50 or
above at this time. I tested latest server and I couldn't reproduce the issue.
Please try some more scenarios to identify the issue. (Such as using different
NETTYPES, using IP address instead of host name, using port number instead of
service name, using local loop, etc...)

Still is pending the upgrade to FC3 But a big breakthrough came when sysmaster
was recreated using $INFORMIXDIR/etc/buildsmi. Reading it, (it is a shell
script) I could see it was extremely important that no one must try to connect
to the database during migration, or the creation of the sysmaster database. I
think this is what happened to us, some cron job we did not disabled back in
that time.
Now my connection times are .16 instead of high .9s.
Still is slower that .06 I am having on other IDS 10 instances on same box.

We saw the same behavior in 11.10.FC2W4. At least .8 seconds to open a
connection with dbaccess. Also happened with dbschema. Got a patch
that fixed this in 11.10.FC3. Maybe the bug is back in 11.50.FC2?
