Intermittent Loss of eAuth Response Comments
Posted in 2012
A DBA on IDS 10.00.TC9X3 (Windows 2000) reported that updates to an lvarchar comment column were intermittently disappearing/being nulled, with no error returned, and asked whether SQL TRACE ON/OFF could help. Replies noted TRACE only works inside stored procedures, and suggested enabling auditing, dumping the logical logs (find the table partnum and rowid, then onlog -t), or using xtrace, AGS Sentinel (bundled, trial/Enterprise licence) or the commercial iWatch to capture the offending SQL. The OP later narrowed it to data over 2K being lost and asked whether IDS or the Informix 3.33 ODBC driver imposes a 2K lvarchar limit; no answer or resolution is recorded.

IDS: 10.00.TC9X3 OS: MS Windows 2000 SP4 =20 Would the TRACE ON and TRACE OFF help in the below case? =20 In a nutshell, we are intermittently losing the update to a column containing fleet management work order authorization comments. We know that the update initially occurs, but for unknown reasons the update does not stick or is somehow set to null later. There are no error return codes to indicate why. The problem can be recreated in the lab, and users would like to trace this in a lab environment. =20 Is there an easy way to turn on a trace within Informix that might give us more information? =20 It would be helpful to confirm that subsequent SQL is not setting the column to null after the update. We could not find any evidence of this in the application code ... just want to eliminate this for sure as a potential root cause. =20 Thanks, ******************************************************************* Ernie Knox IT Database Administrator Specialist Sears Holdings - BU: I & T Group 3333 Beverly Rd. The two options I see are:
1) You can turn on auditing
2) You can review the logical logs.
a) Find the partnum of the table in questions
b) Find the rowid in questions
c) onlog -t <<partnum>>
d) Review all records for the specific rowid

TRACE ON/OFF only works within stored procedures. Couple of options that I see: 1. You can try the xtrace utility and see what it catches. 2. Try to catch the offending SQL using AGS Sentinel 3. See if iWatch from Exact-Solutions can work with 10.00 (don't remember). If it does it will capture the update and the session details of where the update came from. Art Art S. Sentinel, along with AGS's Server Studio, is delivered with the Informix engine, and you can activate a 30 day free trial anytime you want (basic Server Studio functionality is free, but Sentinel is part of the Enterprise level license which is extra after the trial period). iWatch is a for-purchase product.
