IDS 7 on Solaris vs. Linux

Hi, I'm wondering what people think about running IDS 7.x on Solaris (8 or above) compared to Linux. In particular I'm wondering about Novell SuSE SLES 9 and Red Hat - RHEL AS 2.1 or RHEL 3.0 (AS, ES, or WS). Are there any combinations that are notable more or less stable than others? We've been running IDS 7.31 UC2 on Solaris 7 for some time now and are contemplating various upgrade paths. BTW, feel free to comment on more recent versions of IDS too. Thanks, John sending to informix-list

Customers are running RedHat 2.1 with 9.40 - solid as a rock. Can't compare to Solaris -sorry. HTH Michael
We setup and run both successfully. Solaris has historically been the first port of Informix and the most popular one. It is very rare that you run into "technology" problems with the Solaris-Informix combination. Linux is also very stable and yielded good results wherever we set it up, but every now and then there is something that is slightly different and does not work as straighforward as Solaris - for example, we had to implement a workaround in the raw device setup under Suse Linux where this worked just fine under Red Hat Linux and always worked great under Solaris... It is a matter of personal comfort level and company direction... My personal preference is still slightly towards Solaris... I'm with Dirk, Norma and particularly Hal here. Most of it will work fine on both, but anything that's slightly out of the ordinary can, as Hal says, require a workaround. I'd extend his point to say that there are also an awful lot of non-Informix things in Linux for which this hold equally true. We have a customer looking to upgrade from an obsolete OS. they have no particular reason to go for Linux or UNIX - and indeed would get better hardware and cheaper OS software if they went Linux - but have chosen a proprietary UNIX on the grounds of perception that there is a lack of accountable support for Linux, by comparison with an identifiable target to beat up if UNX goes wrong ( I'm not sure myself that this is actually true: IBM in the UK has put a lot of investment into support for Linux and would not, I think, let a major Data Management customer flounder. But perception is eveything). I truly believe that a company who could build a reputation for Enterprise Linux support could pick up a vast amount of services business. The problem is that it's unattractive option for two reasons: one there is no licensing and little maintenance revenue to be had; two (and here speaks the bitter Voice of Experience) if you do so promote yourself you invite endless calls from timewasting Bozos wanting support for tiny file and print server installations. I haven't found a Middle Way yet .... "Hal Maner" <hmaner@msystemsintlnospam.com> wrote in message news:l55Rd.5363$VI5.3575@newsread3.news.atl.earthlink.net... > We setup and run both successfully.
