It would be good to have 2 options available aka graceful shutdown approach. I agree that the admin might have to wait quite a while to obtain exclusive access to the database. That is why a forced option is also needed. You are more likely to get permission to perform a forced shutdown for a single database than for the entire server. Shutting down the entire server to perform maintenance on a single db is inconvenient to everyone. It would be nice to leave other users free to go about their work. Mark sending to informix-list
