Thanks to the suggestions of those who responded, I was able to narrow my problem down to a rather large union. It was actually doing a "union" where a "union all" would have sufficed. Since the "union all" doesn't try to delete any duplicate entries, it doesn't create all the extra temp tables apparently needed to run this "union". At any rate, thanks to all who responded!
