Re: TAPESIZE question.
Posted in 2012
The poster asked how to set TAPESIZE for ontape (IDS 9.40 on HP-UX 11.11) when the tape's capacity is unknown. Advice: set TAPESIZE=0 so ontape uses the device's end-of-medium detection and prompts for additional tapes; alternatively measure capacity by writing to the tape with dd (e.g. from /dev/zero or 'yes') until it errors and reading the block count. TAPESIZE=0 worked for the backup. A follow-up restore failed ("read archive backup failed code -1"); suggestions included checking that source and target run identical OS/IDS versions. The poster later said the tape issue was solved but then hit a separate KAIO/'/dev/async' error on the target, for which no resolution is recorded.

you could dd if=/dev/null os=<tape> bs=2048K and let it run, when it errors you should get a block count Cheers Paul > Hello Informix gurus, > If I do not know the capacity of the tape, how do I specify TAPESIZE so > that > whatever the maximum size of the tape can be used? What you could do is to set TAPESIZE to zero, take an ontape archive. If
it fails then the dd command that Paul posted will tell you how much data
was written. If not and ontape successfully asks for another tape, then
you are good to use zero all the time. If ontape is successful but doesn't
ask for another tape, then you know that you are good at least until you
outgrow the length of the tape and ontape either fails or asks for another
tape.

Subject: Re: TAPESIZE question. [26419]
Art,
Remember I asked you guys about this?
Ok, so setting TAPESIZE=0 seems to work fine. But it fails to restore, is it
because the tape was said to be in the drive and it's actually not? please see
down below.
Thanks.

What you could do is to set TAPESIZE to zero, take an ontape archive. If
it fails then the dd command that Paul posted will tell you how much data
was written. If not and ontape successfully asks for another tape, then
you are good to use zero all the time. If ontape is successful but doesn't
ask for another tape, then you know that you are good at least until you
outgrow the length of the tape and ontape either fails or asks for another
tape.
