Point in Time Recovery Failed
Posted in 2006
A user on IDS 9.40 FC5 (AIX) with ON-Bar and TSM couldn't do a point-in-time restore to 18:05 after a second level-0 archive had been taken at 18:25; onbar either did nothing or restored from the latest archive instead. Art Kagel explained you must use the earlier 18:00 archive as the restore base (you can't roll forward to a time before the base archive). Others suggested editing (after backing up) the ixbar.<servernum> file to remove entries after the wanted level-0, keeping the logical logs rootdbs needs, checking TSM retention policies, resetting bar_action/bar_instance and ixbar, and enabling BAR_DEBUG logging. Editing ixbar still gave "Backup object does not exist in Storage Manager" errors; no confirmed resolution is recorded.

Hi Folks,
I Got a problem with restore point in time. I´m using IDS 9.40 FC5 for AIX
5.2 ML 8. I performed a level 0 archive 3 times. I´m using onbar and my
Storage Manager is Tivoli (TSM) with TDP 5.2.1 and API 5.1.5 . The problem
is that I can´t restore my archive to 30 minutes ago. The test I made was:
At 22 - 06 - 2006:
1 - Create a table
2 - Perform a Level 0 archive at 18:00
3 - Wait 10 minutes
4 - Drop the table created
5 - Perform a Level 0 archive again
6 - Shut the IDS Server down
7 - Perform a restore using onbar like this:
server:/usr/informix> onbar -r -t "2006-06-22 18:05:00"
I performed this statement 10 minutes after a shut the IDS server down. I
didn´t recieve any message at the screen and the Informix instance doesn´t
even try to initialize ( I was monitoring online.log). Worse: When put a
datetime after that used ( 20 minutes after 18:25), the restore was
performed but was not my expectation, I mean, was not a point in time
restore but a whole restore using the latest avaliable archive.
Does anybody here see this before ?
You have to use the archive taken at 18:00 as the restore base for a
point-in-time restore. After restoring the server to its state at 18:00 onbar
and the engine will roll-forward whatever logical log entries are needed to
bring the engine back to its state at 18:05:00. You cannot do a point-in-time
restore to a point BEFORE the base archive was taken.

Thanks ART KAGEL,
But I can´t choose what archive I want to use. I don´t even know what
physical TAPE I´m using. The TSM send the archive to a tape. The problem is,
I got 800 Gb in one tape, I´m mean, in a week, I could have a a lot of
"Level 0 Archives". Do I have a way to chosse this archive? How could I send
a statement that bring me a specific archive? I´m wanting something
impossible?
Thanks

What I do is edit the ixbar.xx file deleting everything prior to the level
0 archive that I want to start from...
You should make a copy of the ixbar.xx file first ... in case something is
ever needed prior to the time you just edited though ...

I do this too, but remember to check the logical log needed for the rootdbs (you'll see it a bit right of the time column), sometimes it is several above the rootdbs, and you need those....then edit accordingly. -- Sam Gentsch office (334)768-7039 cell (706)289-6710 -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Peter_Logan.... Don't use onbar myself, so I'm not the expert. However, I note that others have
posted how they are doing this.

Ok, guys, it´s me again ! I tryied to do what you told me, but it didn´t work. I got some doubts about the lines that I could delete from ixbar.servernum , so I take a copy from this file everytime before I perform a Level 0 archive. Thisa way, I could see exatcly what is changed from each they. But even I edit the file, the problem continue. The message I received was 2006-06-23 14:37:17 831696 876756 XBSA Error: (BSAGetObject) Backup object does not exist in Storage Manager. 2006-06-23 14:37:17 831696 876756 ON-Bar was unable to get backup record of rootdbs from storage manager. 2006-06-23 14:37:17 831696 876756 Due to the previous error, logical restore will not be attempted. I believe that it´s not that easy to find a specific archive in a tape, when this got more than one backup. So guys, I´m trying a last shot with you. Do you know what the TSM retention policy is? Only time I have run into this type of error was when I was attempting to get an old archive that had already been purged from Tivoli. Put
BAR_DEBUG 7
BAR_DEBUG_LOG /mydir/myfile
in the $ONCONFIG file and try again.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/4927/debug.html
has lots of good info on onbar and how to debug it.
Otherwise log a support call with IBM.

I am not sure what you have tried so far but to start a fresh I would do the following 1. Unload/Delete all the records from bar_action, bar_instance tables. 2. Move the file $INFORMIXDIR/etc/ixbar.nnn (servernum) 3. Touch the above file Then do a complete test of your backups and restore. Does anybody here have any idea else the before ideas.
