Disk Crash killing logs
Posted in 1994
Folks, This is a (knock-on-wood) hypothetical question that may be some general interest. Suppose you have your logical logfiles on a disk by themselves (or at least sharing no part of your database partitions) and you have a disk crash on that log disk. Suppose you've followed the suggestions and are using links to identify your chunks. Your crash is limited to the logs.....the rest of the database is unhurt. How badly are you hurt by this? Can the system be brought up with another disk linked in as your log disk? Or, do you need to restore from tape (and lose the data contained in the logfile you were working on at the time of the crash....assuming your logs are being backed up to tape after use). As a related question, if you are indeed up a creek here, would running just your logfiles on a mirrored disk help? What I'm after is the ability to guarantee that I can get my data back, even if it takes a restore.
